fight card

GLORY, the world’s premier kickboxing league, today announced the full fight card for its first visit to San Diego as Valley View Casino Center hosts GLORY 21 on Friday, May 8. The event airs live on Spike TV at 11/10c.

GLORY’s middleweight title is on the line in the headline bout as reigning champion Artem “The Lion” Levin (50-4-1, 33 KOs) of Russia defends his belt against Canadian muay thai world champion Simon “Bad Bwoy” Marcus (42-2-1, 24 KOs). The challenger Marcus earned his title shot in April at GLORY 20 by defeating Wayne Barrett and Jason Wilnis on the same night to win the Middleweight Contender Tournament. Having met once before under muay thai rules, Marcus earned a unanimous decision nod over Levin in March of 2013.

In the co-headline bout, American karate world champion and human highlight reel Raymond “The Real Deal” Daniels (26-2, 16 KOs) squares off with veteran MMA welterweightJustin “Raw Deal” Baesman (16-7, 4 KOs in MMA) under GLORY rules.

In association with Veteran Operation Wellness (VOW), GLORY will host its second armed forces exhibition bout featuring Devin Goodale of the US Navy competing against US Marine Corps veteran Kyle Stewart at middleweight.

VOW is a Spike campaign created to inspire veterans to make the same commitment to their health and wellness that they made to their country.

Originally announced as an All-American Heavyweight Qualification Tournament, GLORY’s one-night, four-man spectacle has received a British infusion as “Chopper” Chi Lewis-Parry (5-0, 1 KO) steps in for Cody East to face American Everett “Wolverine” Sims (0-1) in the first of two semi-final match-ups. On the other side of the bracket, heavy handed Xavier “X-Man” Vigney (6-1, 6 KOs) battles Maurice “The Gorilla” Jackson (31-0, 23 KOs).

After meeting and defeating two opponents in a single night, the tournament winner will be granted entry into GLORY’s Heavyweight Contender Tournament later this year.

The full fight card for GLORY 21 can be found below:

Middleweight Title Headline Bout: Artem Levin vs. Simon Marcus

Welterweight Co-Headline Bout: Raymond Daniels vs. Justin Baesman

Middleweight Armed Forces Exhibition Bout: Devin Goodale vs. Kyle Stewart

Heavyweight Qualification Tournament Bout: Chi Lewis-Parry vs. Everett Sims

Heavyweight Qualification Tournament Bout: Xavier Vigney vs. Maurice Jackson

PAUL CLEMENT TO REPRESENT UFC®IN APPEAL OF NEW YORK’S MMA BAN

FORMER UNITED STATES SOLICITOR GENERAL

Las Vegas ‒ UFC® has retained Paul Clement, former United States Solicitor General, to spearhead the organization’s appeals process after Judge Kimba Wood of the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York dismissed a lawsuit challenging the legality of New York’s ban on professional mixed martial arts (MMA) matches and exhibitions.

The judge’s dismissal of the UFC’s case against the State of New York in March was based on a technicality, and the decision confirms the state is misapplying the law. UFC was advised by the judge to “consider filing new vagueness claims.” Wood also stated the New York Attorney General’s “recent statements that the Ban prohibits sanctioned MMA” were made “despite [the law’s] plain language to the contrary.” UFC also believes that Judge Wood erred in failing to recognize the serious First Amendment problems with the New York law.

“We retained Paul Clement, one of the nation’s most highly respected appellate lawyers, to aggressively appeal the lower court’s technical dismissal of this matter,” UFC Chief Legal Officer Kirk Hendrick said. “Clement shares our view that New York’s law is unconstitutional and dangerous, and we will get the decision overturned.”

The State of New York passed legislation in 1997 banning professional MMA events, citing concerns for the lack of safety regulations. Since that time, the UFC has been on the forefront of athlete safety and implemented some of the most effective and strictest safety regulations in sports, resulting in 49 states and numerous countries legalizing MMA. Because New York’s law is vague, misapplied, and both overbroad and underinclusive, unsanctioned amateur MMA events—wholly unregulated and lacking necessary safety standards—have been allowed to take place.

“I am delighted to be representing the UFC in this important challenge to New York’s outdated and unconstitutional law,” Clement stated. “Even New York officials are confused about the scope of this hopelessly unclear law, and by targeting professional MMA matches and exhibitions, the law raises First Amendment problems of the first order,” he added.

Clement is a partner at Bancroft PLLC and represents a diverse range of clients in both federal and state appellate courts. He represented the National Basketball Association during labor negotiations in 2011 and the National Football League during a potential lockout season. Throughout his legal career, Clement has argued more than 75 cases in front of the United States Supreme Court and is regularly regarded as one of the most influential lawyers in the country. Confirmed by the United States Senate, Clement served as Solicitor General from June 2005 to Jun 2008. He also serves as a Distinguished Lecturer in Law at the Georgetown University Law Center and a Senior Fellow of the Law Center’s Supreme Court Institute.

The plaintiffs are also being represented in this action by Barry Friedman, the Jacob D. Fuchsberg Professor of Law at New York University School of Law, and Jamie A. Levitt of Morrison & Foerster LLP in New York.

We NEED a KICKSTART

A ridiculous sitcom that takes place in a boxing gym and stars a bunch of actual professional boxers and MMA fighters. Kick ass, huh?!

About this project

What we’re doing:

We’re fighters, and we love comedy. So we thought, “Why not combine these two awesome things?” And, so we did. We created ON THE ROPES, a sitcom set in a boxing gym. The real kicker, though, is that a lot of the cast and crew are real professional fighters. Boxers? Not really. We’re MMA fighters, but we like the idea of a boxing gym as the backdrop of our show. I suppose we’re fighters pretending to be actors pretending to be fighters.

So, to the show, itself: ON THE ROPES is a sitcom set in a rundown boxing gym in Phoenix, AZ—think “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” meets the boxing world—that plans to feature a different MMA personality for each one of its eight first-season episodes.

The show is an edgy comedy that explores the absurdity of fighters, and how they react to everyday situations. The super awesome part of it all is that each episode will be written specifically with an intended featured MMA star in mind, allowing the writers to maximize each fighter’s personality and bring that to screen while pushing as many boundaries as possible.

MMA Stars That Have Signed On:

Top MMA fighters that have already signed on to episodes include a who’s who of the MMA world. Former Ultimate Fighting Championships® (UFC) lightweight champion, Benson Henderson; Season 8 winner of “The Ultimate Fighter®,” Efrain Escudero; Matt Mitrione; Meisha Tate; current Bantam weight world champion, TJ Dillashaw; Felice Herrig, and fan favorite, Clay Guida; as well as former “Human Weapon” host and commentator for Bellator and One FC, Jason Chambers, has also signed on.

Where Can You watch?

As for distribution, we are definitely going to leverage the star power we have with the big MMA names when we approach networks with our final product. However, if a network doesn’t sign the series, we are planning on releasing the entire series on Amazon VOD, Netflix, Hulu Plus, and Vimeo On Demand.

Where’s Your Money Going?

WHERE’S YOUR MONEY GOING? The cost to bring in all of the MMA personalities (and pay them for their time) is substantial. Also, production costs are another large portion. We want to make sure this is TV quality, so we’re hiring professional videographers, sound and lighting production, editors, color grader/color correctors and more. We also need a set, which means we have to find a good building and then build a set from scratch so we can shoot as seamlessly as possible. If there’s a dollar left over after all of the costs, I will go directly to a gas station and buy a lottery ticket, though. My odds of winning are pretty good, I think, so there’s that!
