ONCE AGAIN, EDUARDO DANTAS DEFEATS MARVOS GALVAO, TAKING BACK THE BELLATOR MMA BANTAMWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP

FRESNO, Calif. — It was a rematch over three years in the making, it was a fight that was scheduled, cancelled and re-scheduled, and on Friday at “Bellator 156” inside Save Mart Center, Marcos Galvao (17-7-1) versus Eduardo Dantas (18-4) was also a barnburner of a main event with the Bellator MMA Bantamweight Championship on the line.

Marcos Galvao V Eduardo Dantas_7738 (1)

Galvao, 33, walked into the arena with the belt in tow, riding high on his memorable victory at the expense of Joe Warren in 2015. But over the course of 25 minutes, Dantas put a halt to any momentum “Loro” had, peppering his former training partner’s left-eye with punches, until it swelled shut. Galvao tried valiantly to slow the pace of “Dudu” through grappling, but the 27-year-old did enough to earn the nod from the California State Athletic Commission judges and take back the belt that he claimed was his all along.

With the defeat, Galvao’s four-fight winning streak was snapped, while Dantas has now pieced together two consecutive victories. The Nova Uniao product will now set his sights on the winner of Darrion Caldwell against Joe Taimanglo at “Bellator 159,” a bout that will determine the new No. 1 contender for Dantas’ freshly won title.

Chidi Njokuani 'Bang Bangs' His Way to Knockout Victory

Chidi Njokuani ‘Bang Bangs’ His Way to Knockout Victory

The co-main event of the evening featured contrasting styles, with Chidi Njokuani (15-4) looking to keep the fight at length and utilize his height and reach advantage, while Thiago Jambo (18-5) worked hard to close the distance and compete on the inside. “Chidi Bang Bang” won out, cracking the gut of Jambo with a kick that folded the Brazilian to the mat. Njokuani pounced, landing left and right punches until referee Mike Beltran waved the fight off at 2:39 of the final round, giving the Las Vegas native a knockout win. After the scrap, the 28-year-old made his interview concise, telling the welterweight division: “anyone can get it.”

4 Brandon Halsey V John Salter_7459

John Salter Taps Brandon Halsey via Triangle Choke

Throughout the lead up to Friday’s event in Fresno, Brandon Halsey (9-2) made it clear that fans watching would see a new and improved “Bull,” and while the former Fresno State Bulldog did demonstrate a new array of striking, it was John Salter (12-3) who stole the show. The 31-year-old Wilmington, N.C. resident caught Halsey on the mat with a triangle choke submission, forcing him to tap out after 4:03 in the first round. Keeping with the trend of his career thus far, every fight Salter has won has been via submission, furthering his claim for a shot at the promotion’s 185-pound belt.

3 Chris Honeycutt V Mikkel Parlo_7358Honeycutt Impresses Hometown Crowd in Middleweight Debut

In the opening main card contest of “Bellator 156: Galvao vs. Dantas,” Fresno’s own Chris Honeycutt (8-1) welcomed Mikkel Parlo (13-3) back to the Bellator MMA cage with a complete 15-minute performance, building upon the wrestling pedigree he’s known for with a newfound dynamic striking arsenal. Usually Parlo, a Danish fighter who had not competed for the Scott Coker-led promotion since 2014, gets the better of his opponents when the fight stays upright, but on Friday, it was “The Cutt” who got the better of the punching exchanges. In the end, it was the 27-year-old Honeycutt who walked away with a unanimous decision, pushing out his current winning streak to two bouts and improving to 4-1 under the Bellator umbrella.

Preliminary Card Results:
Jermaine McDermott (3-0) defeated Blake Watkins (5-1) via TKO at :20 of round one

Paul Ruiz (7-3) defeated Chris Buron (5-1) via split decision (30-27, 28-29, 30-27)

Javy Ayala (9-5) defeated Roy Boughton (14-8) via TKO at 3:02 of round one

Nick Bustamante (4-1) defeated Antoine Smith (2-6-1) via majority decision (28-28, 29-27, 29-27)

Jose Cabezas (6-8) defeated John Paul Elias (3-1) via knockout at :25 of round one

Chris Lewis (1-0) defeated Myron Smith (2-3) via TKO at 4:48 of round one

Luis Jauregui (4-2) defeated Ryan Tobar (3-3) via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)

Ben Reiter (17-1-1) defeated A.J. Matthews (8-5) via unanimous decision (30-26, 30-26, 30-26)

Carrington Banks (5-0) defeated C.J. Keith (8-4) via unanimous decision (30-25, 30-26, 30-26)

RAMPAGE RETURNS PREMIERES TONIGHT

“RAMPAGE RETURNS,” A NEW SPIKE ORIGINAL DOCUMENTARY FEATURING ONE OF MMA’s MOST ENTERTAINING AND EXCITING FIGHTERS, PREMIERES TONIGHT, FRIDAY, JUNE 17 AT 11:00pm ET/PT.

New York, NY, June 17, 2016 – Spike TV takes a compelling look at one of the most popular MMA fighters of all time, Quinton “Rampage” Jackson as he returns to battle Olympic gold medalist Satoshi Ishii at Bellator: Dynamite 2 in the original one-hour documentary, “Rampage Returns,” premiering Tonight, Friday, June 17 at 11:00pm ET/PT.

From a tumultuous family life while growing up in Memphis, to discussing the difference in his two personalities Quinton and Rampage, “Rampage Returns” is a revealing look at what motivates the controversial and outspoken MMA legend.  The show also gives viewers an exclusive look at Rampage’s grueling training sessions in Huntington Beach, CA with his training team led by former fighter and renowned trainer Tiki Ghosn. As motivation, they visit the places Rampage used to train when he began fighting 15 years ago as he reflects on how far he has come in life.

The lighter, whimsical side of Jackson is also showcased as cameras follow him to various commercial shoots.

Jackson is currently riding a four-fight winning streak including victories over “King Mo,” Christian M’Pumbu, and Joey Beltran in the Bellator cage.

In his return to the Bellator cage, Rampage takes on Satoshi Ishii, an MMA star from Japan, who has already climbed to the pinnacle of another combat sport, having won Gold in Judo in the +100 KG division at the 2008 Olympics. In MMA, Ishii has fought many of the sport’s biggest names including Fedor Emelianenko, Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic, and Tim Sylvia. His fight against “Rampage” will be his first on American soil.

Bellator: Dynamite 2 airs LIVE on Spike Friday, June 24 at 8:00pm ET/PT from the Scottrade Center in St. Louis.  For more information:http://bellator.spike.com/

“Rampage Returns” is Executive Produced by Leigh Simons Productions along with Scott Coker, Kevin Kay, Jon Slusser, and Jaimee Kosanke.

Bryan Caraway Calling out the Champ: I Can Drag Dominick Cruz into Unknown Territory

“First of all I feel like I have earned it. My ranking, being the number 4 guy speaks for itself. I have been grinding a long time in this sport. I just beat the guy who was supposed to beat Dominick Cruz, 12 and 0 Al Germain Sterling coming up finishing everybody. I am supposed to get killed: I am the underdog. I come in there and beat him at his own game. I fought Eddie Wineland, I came off a 10 month layoff, Wineland was known as 1 of the best strikers in our division. I went out there, out struck him. I showed my well roundedness. The number 1 reason why I should get the title shot is because I will beat Dominick Cruz. He has an awkward style that looks flashy down at the ground but I I know I can beat him. I know I am the guy to beat him. Dominick Cruz wants a big fight. He says in interviews that he wants only top 5 guys. Well I am right here buddy, number 4. Fresh meat, fresh blood, they need to get some different faces up there and what would be cooler than having Miesha Tate as bantamweight 135 pound world champ and myself as the world champion? I am ready to sell this fight. I am ready to step up and win that world title.”

Miesha Tate MMA Fight Radio Photo

“I have been a veteran for a long time. I have a high fight IQ and I might not look as flashy as some guys: Dominick Cruz and his fancy footwork. But you know what I have a unorthodox style, I impose my will on guys. I impose my will, I find their weaknesses and I beat guys up. People break under my pressure. You seen Al Germain Sterling: He comes out, I had a tough first round, kind of got a slow start from having some ring rust. I come back out and I pretty much poke him, I impose my will and he had nothing for me after that. I know just my style can go out there and I can drag Dominick Cruz into unknown territory that he hasn’t been in and bring the fight to him. I am not a guy who is going to run away from him. I will stand in front of him and I will walk him down I don’t care how many punches he hits me, when I get a hold of him he is going to be in trouble.”

If Assuncao beats TJ should the shot really go to him since Caraway lost to him in the past? “I feel it is all about timing. I do think Assuncao is the number 1 guy, previously in the past that deserved a title shot. But the guy he is not reliable. He keeps getting hurt, whatever happens for whatever reason he keeps missing opportunities. And to argue that point Dominick Cruz lost to Urijah Faber back in freaking what 2009 or how long ago. So if we are going to bring up old stuff that was 2 years ago so that was a different fight, yeah I lost to Assuncao but I lost to a few other guys too way back in the day. Should they fight for the world title in front of me because I lost to them? That’s old news. It’s a new age and new day. I am getting better every single day and I think it just comes down to timing wise.  If Assuncao beats Dillashaw, depends if Dominick Cruz is ready to go. but other than that I feel I am the next guy in line to go. Time wise I am the next guy in line for the title shot.”

MMA-Fight-Radio

“People are starting to take me for serious and the guys who aren’t you’re going to keep losing money because they are betting against me. I have been underestimated and the underdog on every UFC fight I fought. They can keep underestimating me whether you love me you’re going to watch me win that world title. Or whether you hate me you can bet on me to lose and that I am going to get my ass kicked and I will disappoint you. But either way people want to watch me I am a draw. I don’t care if it is because of my girlfriend world champ. I don’t care why I am the draw, but I am the draw, I will be the draw and you always have those haters out there.”

So much more …

MMA AT IT’S FINEST

Rory MacDonald’s Career Gamble

Written by: Shawn Dallas Hall MMA Fight Radio Co- Host, Beat Writer and Certified MMA Judge

On Saturday the 18th of June we get the chance to see one of the best match-ups in Welterweight History, when #1 Rory “Red King” MacDonald (18-3) heads into the biggest fight of his life against the streaking and freakishly talented #2 Stephan “Wonderboy” Thompson (12-1). For us die-hards we all expected to see this match-up but assumed it would be when one of these two was wearing UFC gold.

UFC Fight Night

As exciting and interesting as it would be with a belt on the line and all the pageantry that goes along with it, the circumstances and landscape changing possibilities surrounding this fight may just make it even more interesting. Rory, a 12 fight UFC vet, former title challenger, and only 26yrs old, has decided to decline the new contract offered by the UFC and fight out his last fight and test free agency. With several other big name aging fighters having received very big contracts for their services, Rory, with a good performance, win or loss is poised to field some large front loaded lucrative deals from bidders like; Bellator, OneFC, and WSOF (to name a few). So, as long as Rory can avoid becoming another edit in Wonderboys’ highlight reel, he is poised to be the next top 10 guy to force the UFC to open the checkbook. But, there’s more to this story.

Let’s examine the options; Rory wins in dominate fashion KO, Sub, TKO, or 50-45 landslide. The UFC then has very little options but to resign him for a much larger sum than previously offered with back-end money and guarantees. With the Canadian market dwindling after the retirement of GSP the UFC has desperately been trying to fill the void with Rory, Cote, Theodorou, etc. Rory being the #1 WW with wins over Current Title contender Tyron Woodley and the streaking Damian Maia as well as coming off the fight of 2015 with the current champ the UFC has to see Rory as irreplaceable and in turn pay him as such.  If Rory losses no matter the method things could change in a hurry.

Rumblings say Scott Coker (Bellator CEO) will talk Viacom into opening their pocketbooks like never before. Spike would love a boost in the Canadian market which Rory would most certainly bring and a McDonald vs Koreshkov fight would be big business for Spike. This makes the possibility of a top 5 WW contender jumping ship very likely.

That is unless UFC again opens the checkbook. The question is; are the UFC execs willing to take that risk? Since Rory has lost to current WW titleholder twice and in this exercise lost to the next title challenger is it worth paying champions money to someone who will need at least 2 or 3 wins before having another opportunity at being the next Canadian champ? Especially when you try and calculate the damage Rory has taken over his last few fights. Do they evaluate him having a shorter cage life than most 26yr olds?

Any way around it the UFC has interest in resigning him but will they value him as much as Bellator does and will they be willing to match what I’m expecting to be a very hefty Bellator offer with the option of opening a new revenue source in sponsorships? Either way Rory seems to come out ahead and the UFC will be left with a very difficult decision on Rory. Whatever happens on Saturday night I will be watching this story closely as it will sure to have a lasting impact on mma and other fighters decisions to test free agency.

UFC Fighter John Moraga’s son leads him to Church

MMA Fight Radio Interview with John Moraga leading into his upcoming fight: The Ultimate Fighter Finale: Team Joanna vs. Team Claudia Finale- JULY 08, 2016 / LAS VEGAS, NV John Moraga 16 – 4 – 0 vs Matheus Nicolau Pereira 11 – 1 – 1

My boy John Moraga
MMA Fight Radio photo UFC John Moraga

Moraga keeping it real, “I am a family man now so my kids bring me allot of smiles. I can’t be fake. I don’t know how to be fake and that’s what it comes from. Like you said I am the realist: but at the same time people change. It has been almost a year since I fought and I haven’t really announced it much or told too many people or made a big deal about it because I didn’t really know how long it was going to keep up. But man I started going to Church this year. I finally found God, put God in my life. It is what it is man. I just got a different outlook on things. I am still going to keep it real no matter what it is. It is not about being tough or gangster.”

“Life just has me at a certain mind state where I didn’t consider certain things. I didn’t take into consideration different perspectives other than how the way my life was going. I guess I needed my life to happen the way it did all the way up until that point. It now fits into my life. I think this all happened the way it was supposed to be.”

“I don’t think I ever really knew I needed it. I didn’t really even look for it to be honest. I send my kids to Catholic School and that kind of happened as a mistake. Just because they originally had, when my son started preschool, that was like the only school I could get him into preschool at. Stuff over the years that they had been teaching him: just, loving other people and just being nice. There were different things he would come home and tell me and it’s like man I couldn’t teach my son that stuff, I didn’t know that stuff. So it kind of opened my eyes. I think it had been maybe in the back of my head for a little bit. I was wanting to maybe start going and getting into it a little bit more. At the beginning of the year my high school coach called me up and invited me to go back down, and he was the last time I went church, was in high school with him. He told me New Years day and it took to the end of January and I have been going every week ever since.”
